Texan Wins Top Prize in M-LAW's Third Annual Wacky Warning Label Contest
"Never iron clothes while they are being worn" judged to be silliest warning.
Southfield, MI: 1/12/00: A warning label found on a household iron cautioning the user to "Never iron clothes while they are being worn" has won the top prize in the third annual "Wacky Warning Label Contest" sponsored by Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch. The watchdog group awarded Bonnie Hay of Plano, Texas $500 plus a copy of the book "The Death of Common Sense: How Law is Suffocating America" by attorney Philip K. Howard.

The winning label was selected by listeners of Chris Holman's popular radio show on WJIM in Lansing, Michigan. Second place was awarded to a Traverse City, Michigan man who found that his 13-inch wheelbarrow tire carries a warning which says, "Not for highway use." Third place prize went to another Texan who purchased a Holmes Bathroom Heater which warns, "This product is not to be used in bathrooms." Last year's winning label warned users of a baby stroller to "Remove child before folding."
"Wacky warning labels are a sign of our lawsuit-happy times," said Robert B. Dorigo Jones, President of Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch, M-LAW. "Today, warning labels must not only protect consumers from injury, they must ward off frivolous lawsuits. Until the courts start throwing out junk lawsuits, we'll see more and more of these wacky labels."
M-LAW is a non-partisan coalition of consumers, professionals, businesses, community leaders, entrepreneurs and others who believe it is time to stop the lawsuit "lottery" being played across the United States. M-LAW's supporters believe all victims have a right to due process of law but are concerned that a growing number of frivolous lawsuits are making a mockery of personal responsibility and piling costs on consumers.
